A1 Springs: Maxlife Garage Door Springs by A1 Garage Door Service

In this article, we’re going to introduce you to MaxLife Springs, a state-of-the-art torsion spring that will help you save money on maintaining your Garage Door.

On top of that, we’re going to explain how MaxLife Springs are made and how they’re more cost-efficient than other torsion springs on the market. Here’s everything you need to know about MaxLife Springs.

A1 Springs

How do automatic garage doors work?

For your garage door to open automatically, it relies on the assistance of multiple parts, including the door opener itself, drums, rollers, sensors, locks and other parts. However, garage door springs are easily one of the most important parts of a garage door system.

Without garage door springs, your garage door wouldn’t even open, given how heavy they are. A garage door opener alone is not strong enough to lift a door that sometimes weighs more than 100 pounds.

Types of Garage Door Springs

While there are multiple types of garage door springs, there are two common types: extension springs and torsion springs. While the former was popular in the past, torsion springs are the industry standard currently.

Like other springs, a torsion spring can be subjected to most types of forces, and it will still return to its original shape once you release it. While extension springs expand and compress when you open your garage door, a torsion spring will twist instead.

Choosing Your Garage Door Spring

The consideration with torsion springs is that they may need consistent maintenance, depending on the torsion spring that you choose, even if that maintenance is adding lubricant to the spring.

What Does a Garage Door Torsion Spring Do?

Garage door systems rely on different parts in order to work properly. Considering that some garage doors can weigh over 100 pounds, it’s safe to say that a door opener alone wouldn’t be able to do all the work and that’s where torsion springs come in.

The torsion spring in your garage door has one job: to help the motor lift the door and open it successfully. This metal coil can do that because of the tension that is stored in it and is released every time the spring twists. Unlike extension spring systems (which usually require a pair of extension springs), a torsion spring can work alone, thanks to its robust build.

How Does a Torsion Spring Work?

If you’re wondering how torsion springs work, the answer is that it’s just Physics at its best. Torsion springs can store mechanical energy every time it twists. When that energy is released, the spring will apply pressure to the door, thus helping the motor lift and close the door without any trouble.

While extension springs are located on each side of the door, you’ll find a torsion spring wrapped around a metal shaft directly above the door. Because torsion springs need to create force to propel the door, the size of the spring will vary depending on the size of the door. Keep this in mind: the bigger the door, the sturdier the torsion spring must be.

What Are the Top Benefits of Choosing Torsion Springs?

Before you go ahead and choose torsion springs over extension springs, first you must understand why it’s beneficial to use the former. Like everything else in life, there are both advantages and disadvantages to using torsion springs in your garage door system.

The main downside to a torsion spring is that they require maintenance on a different basis than extension springs. Because they deal with so much pressure, torsion springs may require professional care more often than the other type of springs. Plus, these springs are on the pricey side given their durability.

Nevertheless, the multiple benefits of choosing torsion springs still make this type of spring the better choice. Below, we’ll briefly mention some of these benefits.

1. Lifespan

When compared to an extension spring, torsion springs last much longer. Let’s estimate that, while extension springs can last up to 10,000 open-and-close cycles, torsion springs can endure twice that number or even more. MaxLife Springs, in turn, will last way more than that, as we’ll explain later.

2. Operation

Because extension springs usually come in pairs, there are large chances that, once these springs are no longer working properly, your garage door system might break. If one of the springs is broken, the door won’t open properly, and you may notice that one side of the door is lifting faster than the other — which will mess up the entire door system.

Torsion springs, on the other hand, operate all alone. As we mentioned before, a torsion spring will equally apply pressure to both sides of the garage door. This way, the chances of one side lifting at a different rate are significantly low.

3. Safety

If you notice that the springs in your garage door are no longer working as they should, you must get them repaired. Your safety will be at stake when you ignore signs such as squeaking sounds or loosened springs.

If you don’t get failing extension springs repaired or replaced, they can break and damage your garage. Or worse — it can cause physical harm to you or someone else when it flies off. While you may be thinking that a torsion spring can pop out as well, the reality is that it won’t fly across the garage and destroy your property.

Remember how we mentioned you would find the torsion spring wrapped around a metal shaft above the garage door? This shaft will prevent the spring from going anywhere and causing material or physical harm.

A1 Springs Near YouIf you’ve been researching garage doors and garage door springs, you must have come across the term “cycle” more than once. In the garage door repair and installation industry, a cycle consists of the opening and closing of a garage door.

That is, if you open and close the door one time, that will be one cycle. If you do it twice, that will be two cycles. It is generally accepted that the average number of cycles for each housing unit with a garage is four cycles a day.

While torsion springs can endure multiple cycles before needing replacement, we noticed that it wasn’t enough. We want to provide our clients with long-lasting garage door systems. For that, we needed to use top-of-the-line door springs.

Considering the average lifespan of regular torsion springs, we knew that we needed a product that would not only have a better quality in terms of material but also a product that would endure as many cycles as possible.

With that in mind, our team at A1 Garage did extensive research and created our signature torsion spring, MaxLife Springs. Our product was created considering the wear-and-tear that is added to the torsion spring every time you open your garage door. And do you know what was the result? We created an extremely reliable and cost-efficient torsion spring! While other torsion springs can last up to 3 years, our tests have shown that A1 MaxLife Springs can work for over two decades before you need to replace them!

How is that possible? It’s simple: at A1 Garage, we developed a thorough manufacturing process that uses state-of-the-art material in order to create high-quality torsion springs. In the following section, we’ll explain how our signature MaxLife Springs are created.

Does this make our MaxLife Springs one of the best springs in the market? Possibly. When you  purchase our MaxLife Springs, you get not only a high-quality product but also stellar service provided by experienced and rigorously trained technicians, as well as lifetime warranties.

From the powder that coats our products in a signature color to the steel that we use to manufacture our MaxLife Springs, we make sure that every single material used in this process is the best available.

How are MaxLife Springs Made?

Each manufacturer of door springs has its own process of creating this type of product. As such, they establish not only the types of material that will go into producing their torsion springs, but also the characteristics of the product.

At A1 Garage, we meticulously chose the best manufacturing processes in order to create the best torsion springs possible. For you to understand how our MaxLife Springs are more efficient than other springs, we’re going to explain three different aspects of our production process that make the difference.

Types of Garage Door Springs Choosing a Garage Door Spring

Wire Diameter

Torsion springs rely heavily on creating force to help a door opener open your garage door. As we explained previously, the torsion spring can do that because of its winding-and-unwinding movements.

That is, every time you press the button to open your garage door, the torsion spring will twist until the door is open. Once you close it, the spring will twist back to its previous position.

The wire diameter is simply the size (or gauge) of the wire that is being used to produce torsion springs. The general rule is that the thicker the wire, the stronger the torsion spring. It’s important to note that when you get thicker wires, the length of the torsion spring will also vary.

A concept that is worth mentioning is that of Inch Pounds Per Turn (or IPPT). The IPPT will help determine the strength with which your garage door opener (along with the torsion spring) will work on opening and closing your garage door.

When a technician replaces the torsion spring with a spring that has a wider wire diameter, they must ensure that the IPPT remains the same as before or at least has a value that is as close to the original as possible.

Otherwise, your garage door system may be wrecked and stop working properly. Or worse, if the IPPT is too different and the torsion spring can’t withstand it, there may even be an accident in addition to the material damage that can be caused in case the torsion spring breaks.

Powder Coating

Powder coating is a type of painting process that uses polyester or epoxy powder instead of wet paint. There are several benefits to choosing powder coating over the regular wet painting process — but the most important one is that it allows for increased performance.

When you “paint” something using the powder coating process, you use dry powder and apply it to the surface of the product using a powder coating system. After the powder coating powder has been applied, the product then undergoes a curing process under a source of heat or ultraviolet light.

It is the curing process that will allow for the coating to basically glue to the surface of the product, which is why powder coating provides better results than wet painting. When the powder sticks to the torsion spring, for instance, the risks of scrapping or scratching are almost zero.

A1 Garage’s MaxLife Springs undergo a powder coating process, which means that our signature springs are resistant to chemicals and weather conditions and have higher durability in general.

On top of that, we use a very specific color to powder coat our garage door torsion springs. If you see a red torsion spring out there, you can bet that you’re looking at a MaxLife Spring!

Spring Winding

Spring winding is the process that turns an iron cable into a resistant torsion spring. There are different types of torsion springs out there, and garage door torsion springs are known for having a helical surface. It is this helicoidal shape that will allow the torsion spring to twist, thus creating the force necessary to lift heavy items such as garage doors.

The process of spring winding of MaxLife Springs is quite simple: the steel wire in its original state is wound around a reel which, in turn, is connected to the machine that will wind the steel wire. The machine then pulls the wire steel and does all the work of winding it until it becomes the MaxLife Spring as we know it.
What is the Average Lifespan of Torsion Springs?

Like everything else in life, garage door springs have a certain lifespan. And no, these springs are not manufactured to have a pre-established lifespan just so you must spend more money. Over time, the torsion spring in your garage door will no longer work as efficiently as it did when it was first installed due to the sheer amount of pressure, they deal with on a daily basis with all the winding and unwinding it does to open and close your garage door. And the cycle life of your garage door torsion spring will vary greatly depending on how much you use it and the type of spring you’re using.

The basic torsion spring is cheaper than other springs, but it lasts approximately 5,000 cycles only. Now, if you purchase an oil-tempered torsion spring, it can last up to 10,000 cycles. A reminder: each open-and-close process equals 1 cycle.

So, if you use the garage door five times a day for 350 days a year, that will be five cycles a day, 1,750 cycles a year. Considering the average lifespan of a basic torsion spring, you’ll have to buy a garage door spring replacement after 3 years of use, approximately.

If you got an oil-tempered torsion spring and you use the garage door five times a day for 350 days, the spring will have to be replaced every 6 years approximately.

How Long Do MaxLife Springs Last?

Technically, having to get a replacement spring every three or six years doesn’t seem like that bad of a deal. However, you must keep in mind that you’ll be taking money out of your pocket to pay for a new torsion spring every time you need a replacement — not to mention the repair costs whenever there’s something wrong with your garage door system.

Our signature MaxLife Springs, on the other hand, are crafted in a very meticulous process, using top-of-the-line material, thus they can last up to 80,000 cycles. Yes, you read that right. A MaxLife spring is 16 times more durable than the basic torsion spring and 8 times more resistant than an oil-tempered spring.

This means that, even if you use your garage door 10 times a day for 350 days a year, your MaxLife torsion springs will only need to be replaced every 22 years. And let’s not worry about repair costs.

When you purchase garage door torsion springs from A1 Garage, you get a lifetime warranty.

As you can see in the image, there is no mistaking our signature MaxLife Springs. Red is one of the official colors of our company, so it’s only natural that our products would be this color.

Our garage door rollers are also coated in red paint, so you can easily identify them as well. It’s important for us to mention that our MaxLife garage door nylon cycle-Z rollers are incredibly durable and can last up to 100,000 cycles!

This means that you won’t have to worry about replacing the torsion springs or the garage door rollers for at least 22 years. And even when your MaxLife springs have reached the end of their lifespan, you won’t necessarily have to buy new garage door rollers.

Remember the previous example of using your garage door 10 times a day for 350 days every year? Well, if you use your garage door this much, your MaxLife garage door rollers will endure up to 28 years!
