A concept that is worth mentioning is that of Inch Pounds Per Turn (or IPPT). The IPPT will help determine the strength with which your garage door opener (along with the torsion spring) will work on opening and closing your garage door.
When a technician replaces the torsion spring with a spring that has a wider wire diameter, they must ensure that the IPPT remains the same as before or at least has a value that is as close to the original as possible.
Otherwise, your garage door system may be wrecked and stop working properly. Or worse, if the IPPT is too different and the torsion spring can’t withstand it, there may even be an accident in addition to the material damage that can be caused in case the torsion spring breaks.
Powder Coating
Powder coating is a type of painting process that uses polyester or epoxy powder instead of wet paint. There are several benefits to choosing powder coating over the regular wet painting process — but the most important one is that it allows for increased performance.
When you “paint” something using the powder coating process, you use dry powder and apply it to the surface of the product using a powder coating system. After the powder coating powder has been applied, the product then undergoes a curing process under a source of heat or ultraviolet light.
It is the curing process that will allow for the coating to basically glue to the surface of the product, which is why powder coating provides better results than wet painting. When the powder sticks to the torsion spring, for instance, the risks of scrapping or scratching are almost zero.

There are different types of torsion springs out there, and garage door torsion springs are known for having a helical surface. It is this helicoidal shape that will allow the torsion spring to twist, thus creating the force necessary to lift heavy items such as garage doors.
The process of spring winding of MaxLife Springs is quite simple: the steel wire in its original state is wound around a reel which, in turn, is connected to the machine that will wind the steel wire. The machine then pulls the wire steel and does all the work of winding it until it becomes the MaxLife Spring as we know it.
What is the Average Lifespan of Torsion Springs?
Like everything else in life, garage door springs have a certain lifespan. And no, these springs are not manufactured to have a pre-established lifespan just so you must spend more money. Over time, the torsion spring in your garage door will no longer work as efficiently as it did when it was first installed due to the sheer amount of pressure, they deal with on a daily basis with all the winding and unwinding it does to open and close your garage door. And the cycle life of your garage door torsion spring will vary greatly depending on how much you use it and the type of spring you’re using.
The basic torsion spring is cheaper than other springs, but it lasts approximately 5,000 cycles only. Now, if you purchase an oil-tempered torsion spring, it can last up to 10,000 cycles. A reminder: each open-and-close process equals 1 cycle.
So, if you use the garage door five times a day for 350 days a year, that will be five cycles a day, 1,750 cycles a year. Considering the average lifespan of a basic torsion spring, you’ll have to buy a garage door spring replacement after 3 years of use, approximately.
If you got an oil-tempered torsion spring and you use the garage door five times a day for 350 days, the spring will have to be replaced every 6 years approximately.
